2001 - A Classic Event The 2001 Nelson Bay Masters proved to be another classic event. It was a mixture of very funny moments some great golf and a few tears. Sean Brindle lived up to his "Mr Consistency" tag and left little opportunity for the field to catch him. With 38 points at Nelson Bay and 32 at Horizon's Sean beat Warren Ross' 2000 winning total by 4 points. Sean Brindle (38 Points) won the Nelson Bay rubber whilst Tim Roebuck (37 Points) pulled out the big ones to produce another win at Horizon's. Tim beat his winning total from last year by a stunning 8 points. The inaugural teams winners were Glenn Smith and Warren Ross (48 Points) at Nelson Bay with Mark Peters and Tim Roebuck (45 Points) winning the Horizon's section. Notable Skins winners were Greg Wright-12 Skins, Sean Brindle-12 Skins with Mark Peters and Jason Brouwers both 11 Skins. The big surprise of the tournament was Glenn Smith who pulled off a truly dismal effort at Horizon's to take the 2001 Chopper award. His two round total of 54 points equaled Greg Wright's effort but Glenn won on a count back. Like a dog on a mat ! The inclusion of Kel Smith in this year's event not only added golfing class to the field but also produced one of the best quotes in the event's history. As we all dragged ourselves out of bed on Sunday morning Kel peeled himself off the floor and in reply to the question "how did you sleep?" - "like a dog on a mat" was his legendary reply ! Out Of Bounds - Brouwers, Fly screens and Lawn ! This year's event was notable for Jason Brouwers' memorable fall through the fly screen at the Wright residence. This coupled with puting tyre tracks over the back lawn saw him spending most of the weekend apologising. |
