2002 - The King Is Dead, Long Live The King. In a truly memorable Masters moment Tim Roebuck knelt down and kissed the hallowed turf of the 18 green at Horizons - He had won the Masters Everybody knew that if Tim could string together a half decent round at Nelson Bay he would be almost unstoppable for the title. That is exactly how things turned out - 35 points on day one put Tim in a tie for the lead with Sean Brindle. Sean is always a good performer at The Bay and he again showed his class. Other notable performances at The Bay were Marty Roebuck and Glenn Smith (both with 33 Points). Marty was the dark horse of the tournament and put everyone on notice with a fine opening to his Masters campaign. Alas, this early form was short lived as the Horizon's Monster took its toll on Sunday. Teams winners this year were Sean Brindle and Marty Roebuck (44 Points) at Nelson Bay with Warren Ross and Sean Brindle (42 Points) winning the Horizon's section. Notable Skins winner was Glenn Smith with an amazing 17.75 Skins, Warren Ross was next best with 11.5 Skins Greg Wright (34 points), Master's Chopper regaining the title from Glenn Smith - whose effort last year can only be described as an aberration. Mark Peters (1) and Glenn Smith (1) both claimed Near Pins whilst Marty Roebuck (2) went home with two. Long Drives were both picked up by Sean Brindle (2) Seven Straight Wipes ! Any hope that Marty Roebuck had of claiming his first green jacket was dashed after a truly unspectacular 7 straight wipes on the front nine of Horizons. This record looked as though it would be short lived when Jason Brouwers put together a string of 5 straight wipes to start the back nine. He redeemed himself with a spectacular 1 pointer to break the drought. |
